The site for this retirement village had many planning constraints – significant vegetation, heritage building, parkland, road extensions and drainage— and was considered undevelopable. By seeing constraints as opportunities Urban Strategies was able to steer the approval of a major retirement village on this site and win the Planning Institute’s award for urban design. Conversion of a heritage monastery to serviced apartments and protection of century-old trees were achieved in the provision of an RAC with specialist dementia wing and community focused retirement living. Urban Strategies addressed access and parking issues by arranging a site parking survey with council accepting a shared parking solution. In doing so, we engaged with a local community who took a keen interest in the outcomes.
