Toowoomba Regional Council has commenced a review of its planning scheme. The review will inform future amendments to the scheme, partly in response to rapid growth and significant new and future infrastructure (including the Wellcamp Airport, Melbourne to Brisbane freight line and second range road) and in order to meet its obligation under the Planning Act to review the scheme every ten years. The current Toowoomba Regional Planning Scheme came into effect in 2012 and has seen a number of amendments in this time, which is no surprise given that it encompasses land from across eight previous local government areas.
Council has released the Planning Scheme Review: Community Discussion Booklet – Building Our Future to outline key priorities and themes under review. It also poses questions to spark debate and identifies trends for consideration. These include ‘aging in neighbourhoods’, new technologies such as electric cars and drones and the concept of a ‘sponge city’ to capture water for utilisation or to avoid potential nuisance or hazard.
The discussion booklet is available on Council’s website and you can also register your interest to participate in future consultation via the ‘Your Say’ portal.
The planning scheme review will be finalised in December 2019.
