Preserving the unique character of Queensland streetscapes Balancing future growth and sustainability against unique heritage

Urban Strategies supports the preservation of the unique character of Queensland’s cities and towns.

Valuable urban features such as Brisbane’s pre-World War II streetscapes should be retained to preserve that unique character and deserve recognition through the Demolition Control Precinct (DCP).

Demolition Control Precinct (DCP) Finding a better balance with City Plan 2000 and Urban Strategies

Unfortunately, the DCP is a blunt instrument and does not recognise the value, or otherwise, of individual buildings.

As a living 21st century city, Brisbane's streets and buildings need to be able to evolve and adapt to the demands of new generations, new sustainable ways of living and ultimately to the flow of time.

For that reason, City Plan 2000 lists 4 criteria for relocation, removal or demolition of character buildings.

These criteria aim to provide a better balance between the general constraints imposed by the DCP when weighed against the value of specific individual buildings within the Demolition Control Precinct.

Urban Strategies can carry out an appraisal of your building against the relevant City Plan 2000 criteria at a reasonable cost.

Where necessary Urban Strategies works with leading heritage architects to appraise the value of streetscapes and buildings to make sure you are fully informed before you jump.

Other South-East Queensland Councils are following Brisbane's example and recognising the need to preserve important character buildings and streetscapes.
